A surface with published data
The part of an implant that matters is not the thread — it is the surface treatment that bone grows onto. Nobel Biocare's TiUnite and Straumann's SLActive have decades of published survival data behind them at ten and fifteen years. An unbranded post has a shape but no literature: nobody has followed it for a decade.
Parts that still exist in ten years
An implant is a platform, not a finished object. In year eight you may need a new abutment or a replacement screw. Nobel Biocare and Straumann connections are stocked worldwide and any implant dentist can order them. A discontinued brand means the only way to fix a loose screw is to remove an implant that was working perfectly.
A dentist at home who can service it
You will fly home. If something needs adjusting, your local dentist has to identify the connection, order the component and torque it correctly. With a documented system that is a routine appointment. With an unknown one it is a referral and an explanation you should not have to give.
A warranty that means something

Ask for the system and the reference
Not just the brand — the specific line and diameter. It should appear on your written quote before surgery, not on a sticker afterwards.
Ask for the implant passport
Every patient here leaves with the batch labels of the implants placed. That document is what your dentist at home reads when they need a component.
Ask what happens in year ten
A clinic that has thought about it will tell you which parts are replaceable and how. A clinic that has not will tell you the implants last forever, which is true of the post and irrelevant to the screw.
Which pieces carry the Nobel Biocare name and which do not
Your quote names one brand. Only part of what goes in your mouth is made by them, and that boundary is where the warranty and every future repair sit.
The fixture — the only piece the manufacturer warranties
The titanium body that goes into bone is the only component the word implant strictly refers to, and the only one the lifetime warranty is written about. Nobel Biocare's lines differ mainly in thread design and how much grip they gain in soft bone at the moment of placement, which is what allows a temporary bridge to be screwed on in the same week. Its TiUnite surface is anodised rather than machined smooth, so bone has texture to grow into. It is also the piece whose batch label goes into the record you take home. The multi-unit abutment — brand-matched, or your repairs get harder
Your bridge does not screw onto the implant. It screws onto an abutment that sits on top of it. In a tilted protocol the angled versions, commonly 17 and 30 degrees, take four implants pointing in four directions and bring them to one common path so a single rigid bridge can seat on all of them. Nobel Biocare's catalogue is the deepest here, which is what you want when a case needs an unusual angle or height. It is also the level at which every future repair happens, so whether this piece is genuine or a third-party copy decides how routine those appointments are.
The prosthetic screws — the part designed to give first
Small titanium screws hold the bridge to the abutments, tightened to a torque the manufacturer specifies. They are the deliberate weak point of the system: if you clench hard on something, the engineering prefers a screw to loosen rather than bone to be lost. A loosened screw is maintenance, not failure — a short appointment if your dentist can identify the connection and order the part from a manufacturer that still stocks it, and a real problem if they cannot. This is the most practical argument for a documented brand.
The bridge — not Nobel Biocare, and not meant to be
The teeth themselves are not made by the implant manufacturer and never were. A hybrid arch has a working life of 6 to 8 years; monolithic Prettau zirconia, milled in our own lab, is our standard for final restorations and lasts 12 years and beyond. When a bridge reaches the end of its life it is remade onto the same implants and the same abutments — you do not start over. The distinction that decides whether a manufacturer warranty is worth anything.
One brand on the quote, several brands in your mouth
An implant system is not a single purchase. The fixture comes from the manufacturer, but the abutments, the prosthetic screws and the laboratory analogues are separate items — and an entire industry makes third-party copies of those, sold as compatible. A clinic can place a genuine Nobel Biocare fixture, connect a copy abutment and a copy screw to it, and still write Nobel Biocare on your invoice without technically lying.
- The junction between fixture and abutment is machined to a tolerance the manufacturer publishes and tests. A copy is machined to its own, and nobody has followed that interface for ten years.
- A manufacturer warranty assumes the parts touching its implant are its parts. A copy component in the chain gives the manufacturer grounds to decline the claim, and you find that out at the worst possible moment.
- Mixed hardware is also how a dentist at home ends up ordering the wrong component: the fixture is one brand, the screw is another, and nothing on the paperwork says so.
What we do about it, and what to ask
The whole chain comes from the same manufacturer — fixture, abutment and screws — and the batch labels for every piece go into the record you take home. What the lifetime warranty actually covers
It is real and it is worth having. It is also narrower than the phrase sounds, and you should know the edges before you travel.
What it covers
The fixture as a manufactured device, for life, regardless of the country it was placed in. If a Nobel Biocare implant fails as a product, the manufacturer replaces the implant. That obligation follows the part, not the clinic — which is exactly why a brand with a global supply chain is not the same promise as a guarantee written by a clinic on hardware nobody else stocks.
What it does not cover
A device warranty replaces a component. It does not pay for the surgical time to remove and place a replacement, the laboratory work, a new bridge, or your flights. It does not cover the bridge at all: acrylic and zirconia are restorations with a service life, not warrantied devices. And no warranty anywhere covers bone lost to untreated gum disease or to smoking through healing.

You leave with the batch labels of every implant placed, so the part is identifiable anywhere in the world. If something goes wrong once you are home, contact your coordinator first: we handle the manufacturer claim rather than sending you to open a file with a company you have never dealt with.
