Zirconia Prettau is a monolithic (one-piece) block of zirconium oxide — the same family of material used in the highest-grade implant crowns. Unlike an acrylic hybrid screwed onto a metal bar, a Prettau arch is a single, tooth-colored structure with no metal underneath. Because light passes through it the way it passes through natural enamel, the result looks like a real smile, not a denture. It never stains, it resists chipping, and it routinely lasts 12+ years, while the implants beneath it are built for 20–30 years. Not All Zirconia Is the Same Thing
Three very different restorations are sold under the same word. Ask which one you are being quoted.
Monolithic — milled from one block
Teeth, biting surface and the ridge that sits against your gum are cut from a single puck of zirconium oxide. There is no core, no bonded layer and no metal beneath it, so there is no interface for anything to separate at. This is what a Prettau arch is, and it is the only final restoration we make.
Layered — a zirconia core with porcelain fired over it
A zirconia framework with feldspathic porcelain built onto the visible surfaces. It can read slightly more lifelike up close, and it carries the one failure mode monolithic does not have: the porcelain can chip away from the core, usually at the edges of the front teeth. Repairing that means taking the arch out of your mouth and sending it to a lab.

Quoted as zirconia, built as a bar-supported bridge: a milled metal substructure with zirconia segments attached to it. More components, more interfaces, more weight — and if the gum recedes over the years the metal can show as a grey line at the margin. It is a legitimate design. It is not the same product, and it should not be compared on price alone.
The three questions that make two quotes comparable
Ask in writing: is the arch monolithic or layered; which zirconia blank is being used; and is the laboratory in the same building or a courier away. A quote that says only zirconia arch answers none of them. Ours says monolithic Prettau, milled and sintered in our own Cancun laboratory, $7,000 for both arches on the Second Trip.
How a Monolithic Prettau Arch Is Actually Made
One block of zirconia, a furnace, and three points where a person decides something a machine cannot.
It arrives as a chalk-soft disc
Pre-sintered zirconium oxide is soft enough to cut and nothing like the material you will eventually chew with. Your arch is milled out of that disc on five axes in one piece — every tooth, the occlusal surface and the tissue side that meets your gum, all in the same operation. Nothing is assembled afterwards, because there is nothing to assemble.
It is milled deliberately oversized
Zirconia contracts as it sinters, so the arch is cut larger than the mouth it is going into and the design software compensates for how much that specific blank will shrink in the furnace. This is the part patients rarely hear: the fit of a zirconia arch is decided in the design file, before it is ever fired. It cannot be improvised at the chair — which is precisely why the try-ins come first.
The colour goes into the material, not onto it
Shade is infiltrated into the porous milled arch before sintering, then characterised and glazed after it. The colour is the material rather than a coating on top of it. That is the technical reason a monolithic arch does not take on stain from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco, and does not yellow the way acrylic does after a few years in the mouth.
Two to three try-ins decide what software cannot
Tooth length, midline, how much tooth shows when you speak, where the bite lands under real muscle: those are judgements, not measurements. You try the arch in your own mouth and the technician adjusts it with you in the chair. Because the mill, the furnace and the surgery are in one building, a change is a walk down a corridor — not a courier, a week and another flight.

When Zirconia Is Not the Right Finish
It is our standard, not a universal answer. These are the cases where we say so out loud.
There is not enough vertical room
A monolithic arch needs a minimum thickness of zirconia between the implant platform and your opposing teeth to stay rigid. When there is very little space — usually because too little bone was reduced at surgery — the arch has to be milled thin, and thin is where zirconia fractures. That is decided months earlier, on the CBCT and in the surgical plan, not on the day of delivery.
You grind hard and will not wear the guard
Bruxism does not rule zirconia out — it is the most fracture-resistant fixed option we make. It changes the design: a flatter bite, no unnecessary cantilever, and the night guard that is included in the $7,000 Second Trip becomes part of the treatment rather than an accessory. Someone who grinds hard and leaves the guard in a drawer will eventually break something, whatever it is made of.
You are chewing against your own natural teeth
Zirconia is harder than enamel. When the opposing arch is still natural teeth rather than a second bridge, a highly polished surface and a carefully adjusted bite matter far more than they do arch against arch. This is not a reason to avoid zirconia. It is the reason the bite check at your follow-up is a clinical appointment and not a formality.
You need to be finished in a single trip
The final zirconia waits for the implants to fuse, roughly four months. If flying twice is not realistic for you, the One Trip route delivers a final hybrid arch in 10 business days instead: $14,990 for both arches, $9,000 for one. Different material, different lifespan — 6 to 8 years against 12 or more — and we would rather say that plainly than sell you the wrong trip.
What Twelve Years With a Zirconia Arch Actually Looks Like
The material is the easy part. What follows is what decides whether it reaches twelve years.
The wear you will never notice
Acrylic teeth abrade year after year. As they shorten the bite closes slightly, and the lower third of the face follows it — the slow change that eventually makes old dentures look like dentures. A monolithic zirconia arch does not wear at that rate, so the bite you fly home with is close to the bite you still have in year ten. It is the least visible advantage of the material and probably the most valuable.
What actually goes wrong, in order of likelihood
A prosthetic screw loosens and is retightened in minutes. The composite sealing the screw access channels wears or discolours and is replaced at a check-up. Plaque left under the bridge inflames the tissue around an implant — preventable, and the only one on this list that genuinely threatens the implants. A fractured zirconia body is far down the order, and when it happens it is usually an arch milled too thin or a cantilever loaded by grinding.
Screw-retained is a repair decision, not a preference
Because the arch is screwed to the abutments it comes off whole and goes back on. A cemented bridge has to be cut off the day anything underneath it needs attention. Before you fly home, ask for your implant system, abutment type and screw specifications in writing: an arch that only the clinic that made it can service is an arch you have to fly back to.
Twelve years is a material figure, not a promise
Zirconia Prettau lasts 12+ years and the Nobel Biocare, Straumann and BioHorizons implants under it are designed for 20 to 30. Those numbers assume you clean under the bridge daily, wear the guard if you were given one, and have the arch unscrewed and professionally cleaned on schedule. The material holds up better than anything else we can offer. It cannot compensate for the parts it is bolted to.
